Buy American for Homeland Security

A bill requiring the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to buy American-made uniforms, footwear, field packs and other equipment was introduced in the Senate Wednesday.

The measure was introduced by Sen. Jay Rockefeller of West Virginia.

The legislation requires Homeland Security agencies to buy American-made products, such as garments and equipment, rather than foreign-made goods.  Rght now, Border Patrol and TSA agents' uniforms worn are made in Mexico.  Those agencies are units of the Department of Homeland Security.

"We have seen too many people lose their jobs to foreign companies, and our federal agencies can take this important step to help support good-paying jobs at home," Rockefeller said.

A similar rule already applies to the Pentagon, Rockefeller said.

"Particularly with many Americans struggling to find work, it's important that the federal government supports our workers and businesses," he said. "In turn, the workers at (Homeland Security) can be proud that their uniforms and equipment are made in America. "
