Like Hindu God, Obama Administration Flexes Multiple Appendages

There's nothing wrong with a little schmoozing of longtime ally India to strengthen trade ties in the midst of a campaign battle over who's out-outsourcing whom, right? Nothing at all, claims the U.S. State Department. Or is it just a case of one arm of Team Obama doing one thing and another arm doing another?

The Obama administration doesn't seem to consider it a contradiction of terms when the commander-in-chief slams outsourcing on the campaign trail while the U.S. State Department tries to improve U.S.-India relations in hopes of paving the way toward freer trade, reports the New York Daily News

Said Mike Hammer, assistant secretary for public affairs, to the foreign media recently: "As a way of promoting American business and American jobs, we're always looking to advance free trade opportunities and to develop the kind of important trade relationships like the one with India, which I think can be beneficial to both countries."

It's all about minimizing obstacles to bring about a "free and fair and level playing playing field" for businesses from both countries to compete upon and succeed, he promised.

"The efforts are focused on creating economic growth, and that provides opportunity because when there's growth in India, that creates markets for American products," he said.

Or conversely, help the country grow its middle class so that more Indians would have the opportunity to the education needed to suck even more jobs out of America that would pay much less than what they pay on U.S. soil.

Or maybe the cynicism has just gotten the best of us. Let us hope so.
